Whether it’s a lifted truck that needs an alignment, a trailer suspension requiring repairs, a 1937 Packard looking for new coils, or even brake work or an oil change for the family car, the automotive mechanics at Downriver Spring Service can do it all.

Downriver Spring Service services vehicles ranging from compact cars to large commercial vehicles and has been established in Lincoln Park since 1974. The auto shop specializes in leaf springs, coils, leaf spring shackles, hangers, brakes, suspensions, lift kits, and wheel alignments. They even work on snow plows.

In October, 2015, Travis Maxson, who has over eight years of experience in automotive management in the Downriver area, became the new owner of Downriver Spring Service.

“We specialize in heavy trucks, RVs, trailers, and ambulances,” Maxson says, adding that Downriver Spring Service also offers services, such as brake repair, alignment, and full service oil change for small vehicles.

The shop has been gearing up to improve and expand its services. It added two camera alignment machines, an AC machine, diagnostic equipment, three hoists, and welding and fabricating equipment. These additions enabled Downriver Spring Service to add other services, such as AC and heating repair.

Additionally, two mechanics have recently joined the team. This makes five certified mechanics: two ASE certified and three with Michigan mechanics certification.

“Our advantage over other shops is the immense amount of experience our mechanics have— totaling 60 years,” says Maxson.

Another asset is the blacksmith shop, which has been part of Downriver Spring Service for many years. That’s where the mechanics rebuild or modify leaf springs. While the team is excited about the new equipment, Maxson and Steve Powers, his operating manager, adamantly say, “Our customers are number one.”

“We want every customer to leave with a smile,” Powers says, explaining that the mechanics do their best to meet and exceed their customers’ expectations.

Maxson continues, “We work with a lot of people from one-car families. When their cars break down, we make it a priority to take care of their vehicles as quickly as possible.” He adds that many times he works after the shop closes on Saturday into the evening and again on Sunday to get a customer’s vehicle ready so they can go to work on Monday.

On the other hand, some people can’t afford all the repairs their cars need. Maxson says the mechanic talks to the people about each item that needs repairs and explains why and where each needed repair should be on a priority list. The company also offers a one year warranty on parts and labor.

“The new and updated equipment and increased number of qualified mechanics enables us to provide more services and serve our customers better,” Maxson says.

Downriver Spring Service is located at 3377 Dix Highway, Lincoln Park. Call 313-928-4208 for additional information or to schedule an appointment for service.
